Seasonal Haiku Films (2025 - 2026)
Over the course of a year I filmed various seasonal “haiku” films throughout the Italian peninsula. This project was inspired by my interest in haiku poetry and a need to return to creative filmmaking and documentary work. The best of the work was the first one I made in spring following a cat as it paid a visit to the Japanese shrine found in San Marino.
The Cat and the Shrine
Beneath the three towers or "Torri" of San Marino stands the "Torii" of the San Marino Jinja. Many curious travelers come to visit this place that blurs the lines between our world and the spirit world. When I visited, I was inspired to create this film, inspired by my fellow traveller and haiku poetry exploring themes of nature and season. This spring film inspired other seasonal "haiku" like films over the course of the year.
Sitting on the altar
the cat becomes one with all.
Little god of spring.
De Aquaeductu
Summer in the Parco degli Acquedotti, the second in my series on seasonal films inspired by haiku poetry.
Amid summer fields,
the aqueducts dream of rain
against the blue sky.
Reflections in the Water
The Giardini Margherita of Bologna presents Claude Debussy's "Reflections in the water" the third entry in my haiku series.
Water drops and leaves
falling into the old pond.
Autumn symphony.
Winter’s Bounty
The final entry of my seasonal haiku film project, exploring a purely sensory experience of a winter's garden.
Oranges ripen.
The gardeners advance while
the frost retreats.
Theatrical Films (2021 - 2025)
Having just graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Theatre Practice and Production at the University of Galway, I found myself wondering how I could bring practices of theatre, including playing with space and time, into my video works.
A Circle of Confusion (2025)
A visual exploration of whether the circle of confusion refers to the body of a camera or the body of a woman.
The Players (2022)
An exploration of time, space, and ping pong.
“My Body Remembers” - Nochtaithe Scene (2021)
How do we remember pain? How can we be witnesses in the present to the tragedies of the past? Using concepts from performance art and inspired by oral testimonies from survivors of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home, I directed a scene exploring legacy and embodied memory using gesture, tempo, and repetition.
This scene was a part of a larger theatrical project called Nochtaithe (meaning Unveiled as Gaeilge), devised by students in the Drama and Theatre Department of University of Galway and led by Dr. Miriam Haughton. This project is a creative response as part of the University of Galway curriculum to the Tuam Oral History Project, led by Dr. Sarah-Anne Buckley and Dr. John Cunningham. More information on the project and the archive can be found here.
Nochtaithe premiered at the Bealtaine Festival in May 2021 and later that year at the Liverpool Irish Festival for the strand In:Visible Women. The full video of the theatrical project can be found here.
Documentary profiles (2013 - 2018)
Ardent Spirits (2018)
Can you create a sensory experience working in a lab? Can chemicals come together to tell a story? Is the perfect intersection of art and science beer brewing?
Ardent Spirits follows Gwen Conley, San Diego's own Sensory Goddess of Beer, as she guides us through the art and science of brewing at The Lost Abbey. With a degree in chemistry and years of experience working in quality control labs, Gwen goes deep into the microbial science of beer, using her chemistry and sensory knowledge to educate and inform people about really good beer. Selected as part of the 2018 Boulder Film and Brew Festival.
Poor Auteurs Podcast (2015)
Poor Auteurs is a podcast interviewing indie filmmakers and artists about making movies with no money!
I had just moved to LA and was looking for some inspiration on how to start my own career. Thank you to all of the artists who gave their time and insights for this project. All of the episodes are free and available on this page here.
Weirdo Records (2013)
For one of my classes at Emerson, we were assigned to direct a documentary on film stock. I had my heart set on directing a narrative film, but in the end I am so happy that I got the opportunity to make this wonderful little film and push myself in a direction I did not know would lead me to where I am today. Accepted into the 2013 Ballston Spa Film Festival and the 2014 Salem Film Fest. Nominated in 2014 for Emerson College’s Evvy Award for Best Documentary.
